Men's Football: Varsity 2012, 18/05/12

Nottingham Uni and Nottingham Trent will wage war again this Friday night at Meadow Lane. The current score in the Varsity series is 7-5 to Uni who need just a solitary win to claim overall victory in the 2012 series. And what fixture is better placed to potentially decide this year’s Varsity than the eagerly awaited men’s football?

It would be no exaggeration to say that the teams who will battle out on Friday night are incredibly well matched, bitter rivals. Only a 97th minute Jake Furman extra time winner could separate the teams last year and we are set for another epic encounter this time around.

Both sides have competed in the BUCS midlands 1A league this year and in scenes comparable to that of the two Manchester clubs in the premiership, only goal difference separated the two sides at the top of the league. Nottingham Uni managed to clinch the title, by just two goals, with 7 points in their last 3 games including an impressive 3-1 victory away at Loughborough.

However, all has not been rosy for the Uni team this season, a poor start meant that the true Nottingham outfit were winless in their first 3 fixtures and the title they were aiming for seemed a long way off. However back to back wins against Oxford and East Anglia, scoring 7 goals in the process set their season on the path to silverware and they never looked back.

Trent, despite just missing out on the league, can take great hope and heart into this Varsity clash. The men in pink have already beaten their city rivals this season with an emphatic 4-1 win away in the cup whilst both league fixtures have ended in draws and so the game remains incredibly difficult to call.

If anymore spice is needed for this Varsity clash animosity between the two teams is at an all-time high after the Uni outfit came across their Trent counterparts while celebrating their league victory in BZR. Needless to say the Trent team were infuriated by this unfortunate coincidence and will be out looking for revenge for the league, the varsity loss last year and the events in BZR when they play on Friday night.

Tickets are available to buy right now but should you be unable to attend the game, urn1350.net has everything you need. Live commentary, expert analysis and interviews with players and fans are all part of the coverage starting at 7. Whether in person or via the radio there is no excuse to miss what sets to be one of the most intriguing and epic battles of the Varsity series.
