Flicking through the national dailies, there is no shortage of stories detailing the tremendous courage of ordinary individuals, their triumphs in the face of adversity or admirable feats of selflessness for the benefit of others. My encounters with such people until very recently have been confined to the newspaper headlines, however, sometimes a personal friend can exceed all expectations, go beyond the call of duty and demonstrate an untold level of valour.

The Men’s and Women’s Varsity Basketball matches took place on Clifton campus, with the home crowd cheering their teams to victory. A collection of AU candidates were present as first the women’s then the men’s team were defeated by Trent who took the lead in the Varsity series, 4-3.

This season Nottingham University have won 5 games and lost 7 in a league that included Loughborough 1sts, Leeds Met 1sts and Newcastle 1sts. Nottingham Trent on the other hand, have lost all 12 games this season shipping a mammoth 352 points. This coupled with the pre-season thrashing at the hands of Uni (44-12), would seem to suggest that Trent stand little chance in this Varsity game.

Formula One returns on the 12th- 14th March in Bahrain for the start of the 2010 season in what looks to be one of the most competitive campaigns ever. The sport (and yes, it is a sport) has undergone extensive off-season surgery and re-appears with a fresh and re-vitalised look.

Clifton Campus Sports centre played host to this year’s Varsity Netball. A 200 strong crowd packed the balcony and floor for an eagerly awaited match up that had the University of Nottingham team as favourites to win.
