NUFC has enjoyed a mixed season on the pitch. It was always going to be difficult to emulate the highs of the 08/09 title-winning campaign, although expectations were high for the return of the 1st team to the Northern Premier following an extended absence. The team were given a baptism of fire in their opening game against eventual champions Leeds, although subsequently showed significant improvements with positive performances against Manchester, Northumbria and Birmingham. An incredible performance against National Champions Loughborough, which included a last-gasp equaliser, was a particular highlight considering that NUFC had been reduced to 10-men after only 20 minutes.
The winter break was set to stifle the momentum that NUFC had gained, although with the lads sitting in a respectable third place going into the final day of the season, the team was confident of ensuring Premiership status for another season. However, a deeply disappointing performance against Northumbria coupled with a number of adverse results elsewhere lead to relegation on the final day, with NUFC finishing a single point adrift of safety. NUFC has recently bounced back from this disappointment by managing to reach the final of the Midlands Universities League trophy which is due to be played out at the Britannia stadium.
