Both the men’s and women’s teams have had outstanding seasons so far within the PricewaterhouseCoopers BUCS Hockey Midlands Conference league. On the men’s side, Uni have played 10 league games winning 7, drawing 1 and only losing 2 (both against Birmingham 2’s). Promotion to the Premier BUCS League has been achieved through the playoffs. The men reached the last 16 in the BUCS Championships however, losing out to Nottingham Trent in Extra Time (2.2 in 70mins). Last year the University side also drew against Trent in 3 games, including a 3-3 draw in the Varsity Match before painfully losing out on penalty flicks. This means Uni have a point to prove and what better event to host it than Varsity! With regards to individuals, Will Lobo captains the men’s side, Richard Lawrence is the current top scorer whilst Dave Nicklin was named AU Athlete of the Month for November.

On the women’s side, the Uni first team are top of their league table having played 10, winning 8, and only losing 2 (both like the men, against Birmingham 2s). The team is coached by Neil Chawla with Izzy Fateh captaining the side throughout their successful season. Indeed, like the men’s, the girls have also achieved promotion into the premier BUCS league this season. Last year, Uni were the victors over Trent and it seems that the girls are just as keen to repeat their success this time round!

Good luck to both the men’s and women’s first teams, it’s going to be a fantastic day with Beeston Hockey Clubhouse open for beverages and food….what other excuse to support your University could you possibly need?! See you on the 26th March at Highfields!
