Varsity Ice Hockey Match Build up… URN Sport speak to Organiser and Trent Captain

18th February 2011

2011 sees the 7th installment of Ice Hockey in the Nottingham Varsity Series set for Monday 21st of February. With a tough act to follow after last year’s 6-6 draw and penalty-shots finale, Trent are set to be trying harder than ever to regain their pride, having lost the last 2 matches despite often being viewed as pre-match favourites.

Varsity is a unique time for Nottingham’s resident student Ice Hockey team as they have to split in two to create the Varsity teams, as opposed to performing under their usual entity ‘The Mavericks’, a composite team made up of students and staff from Uni & Trent.

The Mavericks compete in each of the three Divisions of the BUIHA Cup Competition, in addition to each of the three Tiers of the BUIHA National Championships. There are four teams in the club, making the Mavericks the biggest universities ice hockey club in the UK. They are also arguably the most successful, having won all of the BUIHA trophies on offer in the past four seasons at least once.
