Women’s Hockey Varsity: Uni Player Profiles

16th March 2011

______________________________________________________________________
Forward – “Pube” – Celia Butler (written by vice captain Helen ferguson)

Celia is the captain of all captains. The most committed and enthusiastic captain I have ever played with. Celia’s positivity and motivational attitude throughout the highs and lows of this season has ensured we remained in the premier league for another year. As well as being an outstanding captain she is also one of the best players on the team. Her speed and strength will knock any defender off their feet but unfortunately not Trent’s. A recent hamstring injury has meant Celia will not be able to play in Varsity but her shouts of encouragement will be heard loud and clear from the sideline.

Goalie – “Eggy” – Katy Blyth

Eggy started off the season as an outfield player but her skills in goal were soon discovered. She bravely stepped up to the plate for our first ever season in Premier league hockey and has been tremendous. She received a number of votes for Player of the Season.

Sweeper – “Fugly” – Helen Ferguson

Our vice captain and Saturday captain. Fugly is one of the best defenders I have ever had the honour to play with. She isn’t afraid to put her body on the line to save a goal and for her efforts, has been hit in the face about 4 times this season. Definitely one to watch.
______________________________________________________________________
Defender – “Starkers” – Sarah Starkey

Starkey is our tall blonde leggy defender. Extremely hard working, hardly anyone gets past her. Got a huge hit on her so watch out for those super quick balls down the line. She has even been known to score a few goals in her time from her defensive position!
______________________________________________________________________
Defender – “Tory” – Victoria Pouncey
Another experienced defender to complete our strong back 3. Tory is super fit and pretty much doesn’t stop running. A great strength to have on the left with her ability to throw a cheeky aerial down the line.
______________________________________________________________________
Defender – “DT” – Victoria McAllister

After starting the season in the 2s, DT has improved so much and truly earnt her place in the 1s squad. She is hoping to bring a bit of Irish luck onto the pitch on Friday!
______________________________________________________________________
Defensive Midfield – “Bloor” – Sophie Bloor

Bloor used to play for Ireland and so brings international experience to the team. She has great awareness and reads the game superbly, finding balls through the middle that you never thought were possible!
______________________________________________________________________
Midfield – “Badger” – Katherine Baker

Badger plays a crucial role in the team at centre midfield. She has excellent transferring and distribution skills and never gives up. She is incredibly encouraging and hardworking on pitch.
______________________________________________________________________
Midfield – “Goldberg” – Beth Golding

One of the few leavers in the squad and definitely the joker in the team. She has great ability to skin players down the right hand side and has been crucial in the set up of many goals this season.
______________________________________________________________________
Midfield – Ellie Atkins

Ellie is our only fourth year, she is extremely skilful and strong on the ball. She will be the one being fouled up front and getting us plenty of short corners as Trent try everything to take the ball off her. She is also our secret drag flicker.
______________________________________________________________________
Midfield – Jo Hunter

Currently in the England U21 squad, Joey is super quick and super skilful. The Trent defenders won’t know what’s hit them. She always manages to get behind the defensive line with her speed so watch out for those one on ones with the goalie.
______________________________________________________________________
Forward – “Pilch” – Becky Eaton

One of our three freshers, Pilch is our blondest member of the team in more ways than one. Pilch has an incredible strike on her and has been known to score unbelievable reverse stick goals this season so is one of our biggest threats upfront. With the Trent keeper being slow on her feet, we are confident Pilch will be on the score sheet on Friday.
______________________________________________________________________
Forward – “Landon” – Izzy Landon

Landon is super keen for all things hockey related. She will run at Trent defenders until she forces a mistake or gets the ball. She never gives up. Best comment of the season, after Pilch scored a super goal “that was as good as anything on the EuroHockey Top Ten goals on YouTube”.
______________________________________________________________________
Forward – “Madden” – Alice Madden

Madden, our favourite ginger teammate. Newly joined she has been vital in setting up goals in our build up to Varsity. Her speciality being making driving runs down the baseline to the penalty spot for another forward to tap it in.
______________________________________________________________________
Forward – Emily Smith

Don’t be fooled by her fresh face. This one has mega skills and especially loves to run…loops around Trent defenders. Don’t be surprised to see the rest of the team stand in amazement if she gets above more than a jog.
