Super Bowl 46: New York Giants 21-17 New England Patriots

12th February 2012

This was the matchup between the NFC champions, the Giants, and the AFC champions, the Patriots. This was also the second time that Tom Brady faced Eli Manning; this was Super Bowl 46 at the Lucas Oil stadium in Indianapolis.

In the patriots first drive Tom Brady was sacked in the endzone by Giants captain Justin Tuck to score a safety for the giants after their first play of the game. Eli Manning then went on to have a perfect first quarter completing all of his passes including a 2 yard touchdown pass to Victor Cruz after a big mistake by the Patriots fielding an extra player on a play which saw a turnover which resulted in a penalty against them and the Giants retaining the ball. Giants defensive end and all-pro Jason Pierre-Paul knocked down two Brady passes in the first quarter with a great start for the Giants. The second quarter saw the resurgence of Tom Brady and the Patriots with a Gostowski field goal and a 4 yard touchdown pass to Danny Woodhead with 8 seconds left in the first half to leave the score a 10-9 Patriots.

The half time show was a spectacle as always with Madonna headlining and performances from MIA, Cee lo Green, LMFAO and Nicki Minaj.

After the excitement of the halftime show The Patriots added another touchdown from a 12 yard pass to Aaron Hernandez early in the third quarter to leave them leading the Giants 17-9. Later in the quarter Lawrence Tynes scored two field goals to leave the game 17-15 going into the fourth quarter.

Eli Manning has made winning in the fourth his speciality this season and after a frustrating quarter for both offenses the Giants offense took to the field with 3.46 left on the clock. Manning picked out Mario Manningham for a stunning 38 yard gain in the play of the game so far. This drive was then finished off with a 6 yard run after trying to stop on the one yard line which gave Tom Brady one more chance at a drive. It ended with a failed Hail Mary pass after two crucial drops by receivers which handed the Giants their second fourth Super Bowl.

After the game MVP Eli Manning said it was a great team effort and congratulated his receivers on allowing himself to win his second Super Bowl MVP. Both Eli’s father and brother were in the crowd to watch the Giants win the Lombardi trophy alongside second year first round pick Jason Pierre-Paul’s blind father Jean who was enjoying the atmosphere. This year’s Super Bowl was a great spectacle and game after the uncertainty of whether we would have a season. It was a great kick off to what promises to be a great year in sport.
