Varsity Women’s Hockey: Uni 4-1 Trent

19th March 2012

The Women’s Hockey team recorded a comfortable 4-1 win in a match against Trent that they dominated.

The game began quite nervously, with possession rapidly switching between the two sides, but Uni belied their superior technical ability by scoring two well-worked goals on the counter-attack courtesy of Katherine Baker and Celia Butler. Indeed, as the game went on the gulf in class between the two clubs became apparent – Uni compete in the BUCS league above Trent and their greater ability showed in their control of the tempo of the game and their increasing hold over possession. But after a third Uni goal scored by Alice Madden, their defenders seemed to lose some concentration. A rare Trent surge forward took advantage of this complacency and they bagged a consolation goal just before half-time.

After the break Uni came back with their composure restored, and proceeded to put Trent under heavy pressure. This time Trent were completely overwhelmed, and regular mistakes from their defenders further contributed to their woes. Such was Uni’s domination of the second half that play rarely left Trent’s third of the field, and the fourth goal put away by Becky Eaton could have been one of many more if the team had really put their mind to it. Overall, the team firmly met expectations in what was a very clear win over Trent, and what must have been an extremely satisfying end to a long, gruelling season for all the players involved.
