What’s New? 25/11/12

25th November 2012

Every week URN’s playlist is updated, but what’s the point if only the presenters get to see what lovely new music we have in store? That’s why we have this; URN’S first “What’s new?” blog. This offers you a small taster of the vast range of music you can expect to hear throughout the day.

The Lumineers – Ho Hey

This track is off their great debut album ‘The Lumineers’ and got to number 8 in the UK charts. It’s also currently our “After Dark Album of the Week’ – who said After Dark and Daytime didn’t mix? This band originates from Denver, Colorado, with Wesley Schultz on lead vocals and guitar, Jeremiah Fraites, drums, percussion, mandolin and vocals, as well as Neyla Pakarek on cello, mandolin and vocals. Ho Hey can only be described as “folk with as edge”… If that’s allowed!

Jakwob – Blinding

Jakwob (James Jacobs) has the ability to put a little bit of everything into one track. He started off as a jazz musician, then moved onto death metal and then made the obvious transition to folk. Now it seems he has stuck with mixing dubstep, electro, classical piano with a dash of “cinematic orchestral soundscapes” – you wouldn’t think it would work, but somehow it really really does. There’s a reason why Zane Lowe chose this as his “Hottest Record in the World’.

Gamble Street – Lucy

Seeing as we are a student radio station, it’s only fitting to have a student band on our playlist? Joe Devine, lead guitarist of Gamble Street, is a Physicist by day here at the University of Nottingham and a rock star by night. Well not quite, but give it a chance… The rest of the band includes Nat Austin (Vocals, Rhythm guitar, piano), Jamie Byrne (drums, percussion and guitar) and Henry Green (bass). If you’re a UoN band/artist and want a chance to get yourselves heard on URN, email a demo of your track(s) to music@urn1350.net.
