Brazil, Boxing, Barton & The Ballon d’Or

30th November 2012

In this Thursday’s issue of the Sport Show, Gaffers was joined by Dave, Paddy, Andy and Chris to discuss the week’s biggest sporting events, starting with a retrospective on Sebastian Vettel’s F1 Drivers Championship victory. The German won his third consecutive title for Red Bull, holding off the challenge of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in the final race of the season at Interlagos, Brazil, last weekend. Next it was a case of the usual suspects, as the panel had their say on the shortlist for the Ballon d’Or (namely Cristiano Ronaldo, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi).

After a One Direction-based interlude at Dave’s request, the boys returned the show to its usual levels of masculinity with their discussion of boxing, beginning with a look at David Price’s next fight, facing up against 45 year old Matt Skelton. The prospect of former England cricketer Andrew Flintoff making his boxing debut filled the panel with some skepticism, however. But they did have kind words for Ricky Hatton, who called an end to his long and journeyed fighting career this week. The team’s assessment of Joey Barton’s inexplicable attempt at a French accent in an Olympique Marseille press conference was not treated so kindly though – listen to it for yourself!

The appointment of Luis Felipe Scolari to the role of Brazilian National Football Team manager was next on the agenda, with the panel disagreeing over whether Big Phil could recreate the successes of 2002 on home soil in 2014 with the team at his disposal. The panel then gave a rundown of the previous night’s Premier League games, in which title contenders Manchester City and Manchester United kept clean sheets and Rafa Benitez’s Chelsea again failed to find the net.
