The Culture Show Opinion: The Brit Award Nominations
15th January 2013
We love an award on the Culture Show and the Brits has been one of my personal favourites since I was really young. Put the date in your diary now for the show- Wednesday 20th February. Last week Nick Grimshaw (who is literally everywhere at the moment) hosted the Brits launch where the nominations were announced.
Here’s a quick round up of the ones everyone is most interested in.
British Male Solo Artist- Calvin Harris, Olly Murs, Ben Howard, Richard Hawley and Plan B.
These guys are all lovely! With Calvin’s album 18 months being a collection of some of the best collaborations EVER, Ben Howard’s gorgeous album which I can’t stop listening to and Olly Murs for being unbelievably cute, it’s hard to decide who deserves it.
British Female Solo Artist- Amy Winehouse, Emeli Sandé, Bat for Lashes, Jessie Ware and Paloma Faith.
Emeli Sandé is hardly ever off our screens at the moment and she was all over the Olympics. It will be very emotional if Amy Winehouse does win.
British Breakthrough Act- Alt-J, Jake Bugg, Rita Ora, Jessie Ware and Ben Howard
Alt-J won the Mercury Music Prize last year so my bet is on them. However on the Culture Show we hold a torch for Nottingham’s own Jake Bugg!
British Group- Alt-J, One Direction, Muse, The xx and Mumford and Sons.
One Direction have had an amazing year of sending girls crazy with the cute smiles and catchy tunes. I think this award has their name on it.
Best British Single-
Adele just won a Golden Globe for Skyfall and she’s nominated here again. Topping our playlist every week on the Culture Show is Robbie Williams with Candy, Alex Clare with Too Close and Florence and the Machine with Spectrum (Say My Name). X Factor winner James Arthur even gets a look in with Impossible.
British Album of the Year- Alt-J – An Awesome Wave, Emeli Sandé – Our Version of Events, Mumford & Sons – Babel, Paloma Faith – Fall to Grace, Plan B – Ill Manors.
Alt-J are dominating this year’s nominations. They totally deserve it, Spotify won’t let me listen to An Awesome Wave anymore because I’ve listened to it too many times! Plus, I could imagine them being quite rock n roll on the evening, which always makes for great TV!
Critic’s Choice has been won by Tom Odell
Narrowly missing out on the BBC Sound of 2013, Tom has won the Critic’s Choice. His music is great, very chilled and a bit like Ben Howard. Give him a listen!
The Culture Show can’t wait for the show in February, with performances from Robbie Williams, Emeli Sandé, Mumford and Sons, Muse, Ben Howard and One Direction. James Corden has got the gig of hosting for the 4th time; let’s hope there isn’t another Adele moment this year!
And a cool Culture Show fact- Damien Hirst has designed the Brit Award! It’s spotty and cute!
