Varsity Swimming Pre-Tournment Report

8th March 2013

If I was a betting man, and in the unlikely event a bookies were prepared to offer odds on a Varsity event, I’d have my money on Uni to win on Wednesday. Why? Because the University of Nottingham have never failed to win Varsity Swimming since the event’s inception. Clearly being the only University in Nottingham to possess a swimming pool has its advantages!

All the evidence demonstrates that Uni possess a much clearer pedigree in this event than do Trent. Last year’s resounding 313-182 Varsity victory aside, Uni have continued to show their form with some very promising results in last month’s BUCS Gatorade National Championships. Ian Macmillan finished a very respectable 4th in the finals of the highly competitive Men’s 200m butterfly, while the Women’s 400m Medley Team put on a barnstorming performance to win the B Final in that event. Uni will be hoping to carry through their form and confidence from the Championships through to Varsity to really put Trent to the sword. NTU, on the other hand, failed to see any of their competitors reach the finals of any of the Championship events – again showing the gulf of class between the two sides.

That said, Uni cannot let confidence turn into complacency. Eventually, one day, Trent will turn up and shock everyone by turning Uni over. It’s got to happen eventually. Let’s just hope it’s not this year! Whatever happens, URN will be bringing you live text updates throughout the afternoon.
