Varsity 2013: Netball Pre-Match Report

19th March 2013

Event: Women’s Netball Varsity
Location: Sport Centre, University of Nottingham
Date: 20th March
Start Time: 2.30pm

Varsity “Super Wednesday” is almost upon us and although it has been reduced to just 2 events, it could be a pivotal day in deciding the destination of the Varsity trophy. The women’s netball team will try and help secure the Varsity series for Nottingham University, who only require 2 more points to seal victory. With a win here and at Lacrosse later the same day Uni will attain an unassailable lead and retain the Varsity trophy for the first time in the competition’s history.

Trent will be keen to gain revenge over their cross-city counterparts however, following a hotly-contested 46-38 victory for Uni in the 2012 Varsity series which helped Uni on their way to a 9-6 overall victory and allowed them to reclaim the trophy that had sat in Trent’s trophy cabinet for the previous two years.

On paper, Uni of Nottingham have the stronger team heading into this match-up as the 1st team are mid-table in Midlands Division 1A, which is one league above the Trent ladies, who in fact share a league with Uni’s 2nd team. The Uni 1st team are currently 4th in the league after accumulating a record of 4 wins and 6 losses in their 10 matches this season. Although Trent are a league below, playing in Midlands Division 2A, they have been nigh on unstoppable this year, losing just twice all season and sitting atop the table. Notably, one of their losses however, came at University Park against Uni’s 2nd team which would seem to bode well for Uni come Super Wednesday. I’m sure the 2nd team will be sharing their game-winning tips with the 1st team!

As a bonus, fans that come down to the Sports Centre on Wednesday will be treated to an exhibition Wheelchair Basketball match. While not worth any Varsity points, as the Paralympics proved, this sport is fast-paced, exciting and surprisingly physical. There is no better showcase than this Varsity series for a sport that may well be seeking inclusion from next year.

If you’re not at the event live, make sure you log on to where we’ll be providing live text coverage of the whole game as Uni strive to chalk up another point in this fascinating 2013 Varsity series.
