Varsity 2013: Men’s Football Prematch Interview & Report

7th May 2013

Fresh out of training in the buildup to their season finale vs Trent in the Varsity Series, Mike Timotheou and Chris Plummer of Nottingham University Football Club took the time to speak to Michael Gaffney about their hopes for the fixture. With their biggest game of the season just days away, Mike emphasised the importance of peak fitness to their preparations for the game.

Uni’s preparations for this game have been rather different to those of Trent, who haven’t played competitively since the end of the BUCS season. Last week the Uni boys faced the huge challenge of facing the force of Loughborough 1sts in the BUCS Cup final. Although the result wasn’t ideal, both Chris and Mike agreed the team could take a lot from the experience to drive them forward to their final game.

Overall, the guys agreed they had come through a season to be proud of, beating all expectations by not only retaining the BUCS Premier League status (a notoriously difficult feat for newly promoted teams) but also achieving the incredible feat of running Loughborough all the way for the title, finishing second. Chris and Mike were hopeful that they could maintain that consistency with a win over Trent, who after all compete in the lower BUCS Midlands 1A Division.

Looking to the game ahead, Chris played up the need to get an early goal and calm things down, whilst also pointing to the team’s ability to soak up pressure which they have relied on throughout the season.

Both Mike and Chris are final years and Varsity veterans, and both agreed that they will be feeling an extra dose of Varsity passion as they look to secure a win against their crosstown rivals as they wear Uni’s colours for the last time.

When asked about Trent, Mike conceded the boys will be facing something of an unknown quantity, given that Uni have played this season in a higher league. However, he was confident that Uni possessed some talents who Trent would struggle to contain.

Both the lads were really looking forward to showing their skills in front of the fans, and really wanted to make the most of the opportunity to perform on such a stage. Chris in particular is hoping to silence a few of the noisier Trent supporters!

When asked to give a final message for all the Uni fans, Mike simply asked for them to back their team and give them the extra energy and drive to push on and win. Chris requested that fans moderate their language on account of his Grandma attending the game… I don’t know how much success he’ll have on that front.

Special thanks to Chris and Mike for taking the time to speak to us, and best of luck to everyone at NUFC for the game.
