Varsity 2013: Women’s Rugby Union Prematch Report
8th May 2013
You thought the barging and scratching in netball was as vicious as women’s sports get? Think again, because on Monday evening you’re going to find out that even a size 8 can land a big hit in a game of rugby – these ladies don’t hold back!
The University of Nottingham WRUFC go into this marquee fixture as slight favourites on account of their superior league status, competing as they do in the elite BUCS Premier North Division. The Uni girls have come through one hell of a season – they only had 2 weeks to bed in the freshers, who account for the bulk of the squad, before the season began, and it came as no surprise to see that they were thrashed in their first three fixtures, 104-0, 77-0 and 44-0 respectively. But they didn’t give up, and consistent effort throughout the season has seen the team develop a formidable defence, and ultimately turn things around to retain their place at the top of the BUCS table.
Trent, although competing in the lower BUCS Midlands 1A Division, may however come into this game with more momentum, owing to a more successful season that saw them finish 4th. In particular, their 78-5 and 44-0 wins home and away over Befordshire show that this side have no shortage of tryscorers in their ranks. Uni’s celebrated, tough-tackling defence is sure to be tested on Monday night.
It’s certainly set to be an intriguing encounter between two very different sides. Both have experienced a considerable turnover of players since last year’s fixture, making this one of the most open and unpredictable events on the Varsity calendar – it’s sure to entertain! Expect to see fists flying and blood split, because these girls will give everything for the win.
