URN & NU2Sport Present: Summer Sports Day
23rd June 2013
Wednesday 19th June saw the URN Sport Team join forces with NU2Sport, the University programme aimed at increasing participation in all forms of sport by students and staff alike, to host a Sports Day at University Park Sports Centre. We invited teams to enter into our competition to win VIP tickets for Crisis nightclub, as well as enjoy the sunshine, sample some ice cream, and of course make the most of the activities on offer. Sports Editor Michael Gaffney explained the focus and purpose of the event.
The URN team were on hand to blast out some tunes in the summer sunshine, with Ben Hollands and Giles Gear on duty to guide listeners and spectators alike through the day’s proceedings.
The teams took part in a variety of challenges, all of which shared some resemblance to those of traditional school sports days… but with a twist! Ben caught up with one of URN’s intrepid team of event officials, Mikey Nissenbaum, who explained the event he was overseeing.
One team who were clearly taking the Sports Day very seriously were Scrumptious, a team of 5 players from Nottingham University Women’s Rugby Club. Thrashing Trent 34-17 in Varsity had clearly not been enough for them, and as Ben found out from Becky, they were raring to claim another victory.
The day culminated with a tug-of-war tournament, and progression through the rounds earned the teams extra points in their ongoing quest for Crisis tickets.
Unsurprisingly, it was the Women’s Rugby Team who tore up the tug-of-war competition, taking on all comers. Giles grabbed another word with Becky for her take on the event.
The tug-of-war final saw Scrumptious face off against the Quicksteppers, a team composed of members of the Nottingham University Dance Society. As Giles discovered, they had brought considerable support, as well as a mascot, for good luck.
Not satisfied with simply watching the competition unfold, Giles took matters into his own hands by challenging other members of URN to a tug-of-war, and participating in this epic duel live on air. You can listen for yourself to how things panned out.
The final tug-of-war saw Scrumptious ride out winners, earning them an additional 100 points on top of the total which they had earned over the course of the Sports Day.
But ultimately it just wasn’t enough! The final standings saw Quicksteppers narrowly beat Newark Hall for the coveted prize of gold medals and VIP Crisis tickets, on account of their massive points score accrued across the day’s various events.
Congratulations to Quicksteppers and commiserations to the other teams. From everyone at URN, a big thank you goes out to everyone at NU2Sport, the University Sports Department and the Students Union who helped to make the Summer Sports Day a success.
