URN’s Sound of Nottingham (6th April)
7th April 2014
Every week, the team from URN After Dark select two tracks for our lovely colleagues to play on their Daytime shows. This year, we have put a specific emphasis on promoting local talent from Nottingham across all genres, that we at URN are keen to support as much as possible through featuring them on our Sound of Nottingham. Our revamped Track of the Week is a song recently released which is yet to hit the mainstream playlists on National Radio and one that we believe is destined for big things. Consider this our way of helping you discover the very best in new music spanning all genres, be it from Nottingham or nationwide!
Sound of Nottingham
What better way to end a fantastic term of showcasing Notts-based music than an incredible collaboration between two of our previous Sound of Nottingham’s: Aja and April Towers. April Towers is an electronic duo made up of Alex Noble and Charlie Burley. They’ve created an amazingly unique sound over the course of their first EP, ‘Peaks’ and their subsequent tracks which have been described by Nusic as creating ‘a very heavily eighties influenced sound, while also staying refreshingly modern.’ They’ve recently started a series of live shows, which have gone down fantastically well and as we understand it, plenty more are in the pipeline. Their remix of Raw combines the stunning vocals of Aja Ireland with the atmospheric, deep synthesized sound that characterises April Towers, and we believe the two marry together perfectly to create, quite simply, a masterpiece of a remix.
You can catch April Towers at Rescue Rooms this Saturday 12th April so don’t miss out on the opportunity!

Track of the Week
With Clean Bandit’s chart-topping track Rather Be still sitting comfortably at Number 8 in the Official Charts, you’d think they’d be taking some well deserved time off. On the contrary, however as their new track Extraordinary, which will be released on May 19 through Atlantic Records, has been posted on their YouTube channel and has already amassed over 225,000 views. The single coincides with the band’s sold-out UK headline tour, which kicks off on April 30 and precedes their debut album ‘New Eyes,’ out on June 2. Known for their self-produced and directed music videos, Clean Bandit shot the video for Extraordinary in Cuba. The track is an emotive and euphoric dance record incorporating strings, steel drums and the soulful vocals of Sharna Bass. Set to be one of this year’s biggest UK breakthrough acts, Clean Bandit’s debut album ‘New Eyes,’ will showcase an array of genres including electronica, garage, dance, house, pop, dancehall, drum and bass, hip hop and more, fully cementing the band’s diverse and distinctive sound. Here at URN, we have no doubt that Extraordinary will be as big – if not bigger – than their smash-hit Rather Be.
