No Homophobia in Sport Event
6th March 2015
A No Homophobia in Sport event was held in the Atrium of the Portland Building on Tuesday evening, as part of a campaign by human rights group Voice Your Rights, in collaboration with the University of Nottingham Students’ Union.
URN went down to the event to speak to attendees about what the event entailed and where the campaign against homophobia in sport goes from here at the University.
Dimitri Vichas organised the event and spoke alongside Students’ Union Sports Officer Kiri Madhani, Hockey Club President Piers Denning and LBGT network Publicity and Outreach Officer Andrew Jowitt. Piers also accepted an award on behalf of the Hockey Club for their work towards campaigning against homophobia, which included an online video that went viral last semester.
Representatives from University sports clubs were in attendance to sign a pledge, which stated:
‘In this club we show zero tolerance to any homophobic or transphobic behaviour, verbal or physical, and we support total inclusiveness of all our members regardless of sexual orientation as per the ethos of our SU’.
