Varsity Ice Hockey Preview
22nd April 2015
Ice Hockey pre-match interview:
Fast-paced, frantic and full of fans is how you could describe Nottingham Varsity Ice Hockey. 7000 supporters will descend on the Capital FM Arena for a sell-out spectacular on Wednesday evening as the biggest Varsity ice hockey match outside of North America graces the city once again.
Ice Hockey is always one of the most unpredictable events of the series. The two universities don’t operate separate teams throughout the season, instead forming together a combined Nottingham Universities side, the Nottingham Mavericks. It adds a personal edge to the Varsity game when the team is split into two.
What we do know is that the match will be of the highest standard. The Mavericks won the league this season with a perfect 10 (wins from 10 games). Not only that, but Varsity “really brings us up to another level”, according to Dan Atkinson – one of the UoN players.
The University of Nottingham has won Ice Hockey for the last two years, last year coming back from 3-0 down to secure a dramatic 4-3 victory.
Ryan Rathbone scored the first two for Trent on that particular series opening night, and is one to watch again on the opposition team having been the Mavericks’ top scorer this season. Jose Leon and Peter Burai are also expected to be standout figures for NTU, while Uni will be hoping that Tom Bradshaw can repeat his goal-scoring performance from last year’s Varsity.
From the lights show to the national anthem, to the cheerleaders and the cauldron of noise that the Arena becomes for the night – Varsity Ice Hockey will again be an adrenaline-fuelled celebration of university sport.
Dan Atkinson says he knows UoN can win. All the more reason, then, to tune in to URN’s full live coverage of the game. Build-up is from 6pm, with Varsity Tonight also on air from 5:30pm.
