Varsity Netball Preview
23rd April 2015
Netball is one of two sports being played in the Varsity series on Thursday evening. It’s an intriguing clash, not least because these teams have been in the same BUCS league this year.
On league form and the head-to-head record, Trent are favourites for the point. They finished 2nd in the league with 7 wins and 3 losses, while UoN finished 5th with 4 wins and 6 losses.
Add into the mix the fact that two of those losses for Uni were at the hands of their local rivals and bringing home the Varsity point looks a tough challenge for the girls in green and gold. Most recently they lost to Trent 48-36 in November, and before that they lost 52-47 in a close game on Jubilee Campus.
There is room for positivity from a University of Nottingham point of view. UoN Captain Emma Bewick says the squad is stronger and fitter now than in the autumn semester, and even the NTU captain has only predicted an extremely narrow win for her team (52-47).
Nevertheless, despite Uni ending the season with a win over the division’s top dogs Birmingham – the West Midlands-based team’s only other defeat of the season was to Nottingham Trent. That was by a wider margin than their defeat to the University of Nottingham too.
The netball club have emphasised the importance of a crowd behind them to help them raise them game, so be sure to get down and support the team at Nottingham Trent’s Clifton Campus if you can.
