Men’s hockey pre-match interview:
Hockey has been a happy hunting ground for the University of Nottingham in recent Varsity series. UoN has won both the men’s and women’s fixtures for the last two years. Most recently, in 2014, the men’s team won 3-1 while the women’s team smashed their opponents 7-0.
Asked about playing style, Uni men’s team player Mo responded: “Argentina style. It’s just pass pass pass. It’s very Arsenal.” Silky skills are to be expected from what he says is an international junior standard side.
The men in green and gold are favourites for this year’s event. They finished 4th in Premier North. In Midlands 1A, which also comprises six teams, Trent won the division – pipping Loughborough 2nds to the title by a point.
Just last month, the team also won the Championship Cup for Nottingham University beating Loughborough’s 1st team in the final.
UoN’s women won their Varsity match by a bigger margin than their male counterparts last year and the statistics suggest that is likely to be the case again in 2015. Like the men’s side, the women finished 4th in Premier North. Nottingham Trent’s 4th placed finish in the division below shouldn’t strike too much fear into the hearts of their rivals. Especially considering this team is, according to what team members Helen, Charlotte and Charlotte told URN, the strongest it’s been in recent years.
The pressure for both the men’s and women’s teams is one of expectation. The men’s team will seek to avoid crumbling as it did in Varsity 3 years ago, losing a half-time lead. As for the women, they say “we love a bit of pressure”.
With the event being near the end of the Varsity series, that might be just as well.
