Varsity Women’s Football Report
1st May 2015
Women’s football post-match interview:
Nottingham Trent continued their domination at Meadow Lane in recent years, with a 4-2 victory in the women’s football.
In a high quality affair, the UoN Ladies – playing against a side from the division above – were beaten in the air on a number of occasions by their opponents.
The first half-was physical and keenly fought, with Trent taking advantage of their early calmness on the ball to win a number of corners and free-kicks. Eventually the pressure told, as Emma Hullingsworth turned the ball in from a Demi Greenham corner. UoN had a chance to hit back immediately as Shannon Swift, a presence up front all afternoon, turned the ball over the bar when through one-on-one.
The equalizer came with just 10 minutes left of the 1st half left, as Lauren Heria pounced on a rebounded Ejupi shot to turn the ball into the back of the net. The teams went in level at the break, with UoN having established a foothold in the match.
The ever dangerous Trent Number 8, Demi Greenham turned the match around at the beginning of the 2nd half however, scoring just after the break with a tame 20-yard strike, which the UoN Keeper, Emily Garland, unfortunately fumbled. Trent continued their positive start in the 2nd half, grabbing another goal from a corner as Laura O’Neill turned in the Greenham cross.
Another cross gave Trent their fourth, this time a break down the right resulting in a goalmouth scramble as UoN failed to clear their lines and Noble took advantage to squirm the ball into the bottom right corner.
UoN attempted to get another in the final 35 minutes, and with just 15 minutes left, Mariah Cameron broke down the right and hit a cross which angled away from Swift but towards the goal to beat Amy Mullett at her near post!
The Green and Gold Army were unable to score a number of half-chances that would have made things really interesting, as Trent showed impressive composure to close the match out by keeping hold of the ball.
The surprisingly small crowd at Meadow Lane was entertained in this encounter, but Trent’s superiority ultimately shone through as they continued their Varsity series comeback.
