Varsity Women’s Rugby Union Report
4th May 2015
UoN 24-12 NTU
Women’s rugby union post-match interview:
Despite a tight match being predicted, the University of Nottingham Women’s Rugby Club were able to pull off a superb victory over Nottingham Trent to extend the Varsity series lead on Saturday evening at Lady Bay arena.
The opening minutes of the match were charachterised by a number of handling errors, however as the UoN side grew into the match they became more assured, frequently pressurising the Trent 22. The pressure proved significant, as the side took the lead through a Cat Thomas try following some strong team play, filled with prime examples of how to carry the ball into a challenge.
The first half was end to end however, and Trent soon hit back with a try of their own following a couple of knock ons by those in green and gold. UoN reclaimed the lead shortly after however, as Cat Thomas grabbed her 2nd try of the match, with the 2nd rower driving over the line from just short of the line.
With Trent also scoring a 2nd try in the opening half, the only difference between the sides at the half-time break would be a missed conversion kick by NTU’s number 10, as the scores settled at 14-12 following a tight opening half.
The decisive period in the match came just after the 2nd half began however as UoN came out all guns blazing, and although the handling errors continued, they managed to force an opening in the Trent defence as Gemma Robinson forced the line-break to go over the try line. With the conversion missed, Trent remained with striking distance, however with the momentum the UoN women performed a superb catch-and-drive from a lineout to create space out wide, where the ball went into the hands of Aoife Fehilly who went over the try line.
In the closing minutes, Trent attempted all they could to get through the lines of the UoN defence, with the UoN full-back being asked to make last-ditch tackles on a number of occasions, however a Trent sin-bin ultimately put the game to bed, as the loud crowd at the Lady Bay arena roared those in green and gold onto victory.
A superb team-round performance, highlighted by strong forward play, the Women’s Rugby managed to extend the Varsity series lead to 8-5 ahead of the Men’s Rugby match later on Saturday evening.
