Varsity Rugby League 2017 *LIVE UPDATES*

Tune in throughout the day for live updates on the opening match of the Nottingham Varsity Series 2017. It’s rugby league on the agenda down at Nottingham Rugby Club kicking-off at 4pm!

 

Head 2 Head BUCS :  It’s currently a very busy period for UoNRL with the firsts playing 3 matches within the space of a week. The green and gold’s rugby league side go in to today’s match straight off the back of a 14-12 victory down in Bath on Wednesday 22nd March, which secured the 1st team’s title defence of the BUCS Championship. The team finished at the summit of Midlands 1A in BUCS, winning the league by a 6-point margin. Due to the victory against Bath they will be looking forward to the end of season BUCS Premier North play-off decider with Manchester Met next Wednesday down at Highfields.

The side will be thankful to have come away from that encounter in the south west injury-free which leaves them with a full squad selection going in to today’s battle against our bitter rivals.

Meanwhile, Trent’s first team have had a steady albeit inconsistent season in BUCS Premier South finishing the league in third after six wins and four defeats over the course of the campaign. NTU reached the quarter-finals of the BUCS Championship and go into the match in good form, winning five out of their last six games, the sixth being a 40-0 drubbing away at Leeds Becket on March 1st.

 

Head 2 Head Varsity : Trent have won five out of the past eleven encounters with UoN in Varsity with the green and gold coming out on top in six of them. UoN have won the last two matches at Lady Bay 20–12 in 2015 and 26-16 in 2016. Trent will be hoping for a result similar to their 40-12 triumph over Uni of in 2014 while the team from NG7 will be hoping for a third victory in as many years.

 

We are underway here at Lady Bay in the glorious sunshine and Trent take an early 6-0 advantage with a converted try. UoN were unable to contend with Trent’s number 8’s pace as he broke away and scored.

 

Trent take another try early in this match ball fed out to Trent’s number 7 on the left wing who touches down – try converted. 12-0 to the men in pink.

After a great burst of pace from UoN’s Crabtree the green and gold appeared to touch down only for the ball to be held up when it was over the line.

The University of Nottingham undone yet again but after a wonderful kick from Trent’s number 8 it is smothered by UoN’s Wilson.

Great kick from Aaron Sim, fumbled by Trent’s number 5 meant a penalty for UoN.

UoN resilient in defence despite numerous assaults on the green and gold’s tryline near the 10 metre line.

 

Absolute gas from Harry Lion for UoN on the left wing covers 20 metres of grass before being tackled by Trent’s number 5.

 

Trent’s number 10 met by Ben Knight and it’s a massive battle between the props in this match. Trent still lead 6-12.

 

HALF-TIME – 6-12 to Trent. After 2 early Trent tries it took a long time for UoN to recover but an excellent try from Elliott Lamble means UoN have a route back into the game. Roll on the second half!

 

Half-time entertainment in the form of the universities’ respective cheerleaders. Nottingham Knights putting the Trent Tigers’ routine to the sword as per.

A frantic start to the second half here has seen the scores increase to 16-10 to Nottingham Trent. A fantastic try from UoN to start the second half after fantastic work from Archie Ashford which wasn’t converted . But then Trent hit back after some lacklustre defending from UoN amd converted the try to make it  16-10.

TRY TO UoN – Harry Lion runs half the length of the pitch after a great piece of play by Aaron Sim, try NOT converted by the green and gold’s Adamson. 14-16 to Trent, GAME ON!

 

Elliot Lamble, Harry Lion and Ben Huntley will be called in this final quarter of the match Come on the green and gold!

 

Try for Trent – foolish penalty conceded from UoN and Trent’s number 6 dives over the line and also converts. UoN have a mountain to climb now. 22-14 to Trent

 

TRY UoN! Some good central charging from Ben Knight who threw the ball out wide to Dan Crabtree who dived over the line, try not converted by Adamson. 22-18 Trent.
