URN's Sound of Nottingham (6th April)

posted 07.04.14 at 5:20pm

Every week, the team from URN After Dark select two tracks for our lovely colleagues to play on their Daytime shows. This year, we have put a specific emphasis on promoting local talent from Nottingham across all genres, that we at URN are keen to support as much as possible through featuring them on our Sound of Nottingham. Our revamped Track of the Week is a song recently released which is yet to hit the mainstream playlists on National Radio and one that we believe is destined for big things. Consider this our way of helping you discover the very best in new music spanning all genres, be it from Nottingham or nationwide!

Sound of Nottingham

This week, we turn to local, three-piece band Three Girl Rhumba. Made up of Tom Thurgood, James Sefton and Ian Lee. They played only their second show last week at Jam Cafe on Friday, but have many more lined up for the months ahead having spent a year focussing on writing music and rehearsing. They are expecting to release their first EP in the coming months, with launch parties scheduled in Nottingham and London. Their EP has been recorded under the watchful guidance of London Recordings, who were also responsible for Dog is Dead's debut album.

Miami Music Week is taking its toll as 3 DJs end up in hospital

We promised to bring you the latest developments and gossip from Miami Music Week; well here are some juicy bits straight out of the Sunshine State!

Twitter erupted night last in the wee hours as party-goers at the SLS Hotel in Miami were told that Avicii would not be performing his scheduled headline set because he had been taken to hospital with a mysterious illness. The Hotel had pulled out all the stops for the massive pool party, even replacing their usual logo on the side of the building with 'AVICII' - awkward!

Very few details have emerged as to why he was rushed to hospital and many are speculating on Twitter as to what is wrong with Ultra’s Saturday night headliner. We hope the Swedish superstar DJ recovers in time to wow the crowd on Saturday night but unbelievable, Avicii wasn’t the only DJ visiting A&E yesterday.

Ultra Debuts

On the eve of Ultra Festival, the greatest concentration of dance music artists and fans anywhere in the world, we take a look at who will be making their debuts at this year’s festival!

Ultra has stepped it up with a bumper line-up for 2014 and by adding phenomenal new stages to Bayford Park, including a live stage. The new live stage features many debutants and offers an eclectic selection of artists ranging from drum and bass kings Chase & Status, to electronic pop Aussies, Empire of the Sun.

French artist Gesaffelstein is headlining the opening night of the live stage and will be bringing his hard hitting techno beats to the ears of the Ultra crowd for the first time. However, the must see act of the first night has to be Basement Jaxx, who are also taking their carnival-like live show to the festival for the first time. Basement Jaxx are a British dance institution and with a back catalogue jam packed with hits such as Where’s Your Head At?, Good Luck and Bingo Bango, expect this debut to be one of the liveliest sets of the weekend.

5 tunes that are going to go off at MMW

Of course, so many new tunes are going to emerge throughout the week that’ll blow the ravers away, but we here at URN predict these 5 tunes will become certified anthems of Miami Music Week 2014.

Oliver Heldens – Gecko

This absolute anthem has been knocking around since before Christmas and has had great support from the world’s biggest DJs and is sure to feature in many sets across the week. Depressingly for the rest of us, Heldens is only 17, so expect to be hearing his name for years to come.

Diplo, Deorro, Steve Aoki – Freak

If I had to name 3 artists that are none for their enormous and sometimes unusual bass lines, these 3 would certainly spring to mind. Freak is a dream collaboration for bass lovers and it certainly doesn’t disappoint, I expect this to be booming from Ultra’s main stage speakers on the reg!

R3hab & Deorro – Flashlight

Recently number one on Beatport, this incredible song has an atmospheric progressive house build up before slapping you in the face with a ferocious EDM drop.

Eric Prydz – Liberate
