What's New? - Give Up on High Hopes Another Day

posted 03.02.13 at 9:01pm

It’s that time of the week again; we’re here to give you a little sample as to how URN can aid your musical needs (but not in the glittery/jazz-hands sense). It’s been a busy week for the station, what with whirlwind arrival of Bastille and 650 of you lot that tagged along. What? You don’t know who Bastille are? It’s okay, no one noticed. Check this out and catch up.
Nevertheless, the music team got together and found something for each one of you… Everybody wins!

Miles Kane – Give Up
Miles Kane has done a little bit of everything. 2007 saw him as the co-frontman to The Last Shadow Puppets with Mr. Alex Turner, then as the frontman to The Rascals, but finally, he has gone solo. Give Up is the first track from his new album, due for release later this year. This bold decision and his edgy new track has got him nominated for NME’s Best Solo Artist of 2013. Listen and see why we’re looking forward to seeing him at the NME tour Feb 12th in Nottingham.

Kodaline – High Hopes

What's New? - We're back!

posted 19.01.13 at 8:36pm

WE ARE BACK! Along with a new year, comes brand-spanking-new music (and a few exams, sadly). Our whole playlist has been revamped, ready to help you procrastinate, keep you entertained as well as up to date with the most recent tracks. The Sound of 2013 has already given us an insight to what we can expect in the music world this year, with Haim as the winners! (For those who read our previous blog, you’re allowed to join in with our smug “I told you so”). Unfortunately, we can’t give you guys an update of EVERYTHING that’s new to playlist - which is a hell of a lot. BUT, we can share with you the tracks we are loving at the moment and the artists we can’t wait to see in 2013.

Frightened Rabbit – The Woodpile

Don’t Save Me With Your Karmageddon Feet...

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas and the new music scene has begun to quieten down. Those in the competition for Christmas Number 1 have started to ensure their song has been shoved in your face, down your throat and in your ears. Anyone else in music is focused on “New year, new releases”. As if THAT would stop URN’s music team! We’ve pulled together and found some amazing new tracks you’re bound to love.

Haim - Don’t Save Me
The Haim sisters suddenly appeared on the new music scene and have grabbed everyone’s attention. LA born Este, Danielle and Alana Haim have just released their EP “Forever”, describing their music as “nu-folk–meets–nineties-R&B", (don’t be alarmed, it’s nothing like TLC vs Mumford!). These girls have a unique sound that sets them aside from anyone else. They’ll be supporting Florence + The Machine on their UK and Ireland tour starting this month, they're definitely ones to watch!

Dot Rotten - Karmageddon

What's New? 25/11/12

Every week URN’s playlist is updated, but what’s the point if only the presenters get to see what lovely new music we have in store? That’s why we have this; URN’S first “What’s new?” blog. This offers you a small taster of the vast range of music you can expect to hear throughout the day.

The Lumineers - Ho Hey

This track is off their great debut album ‘The Lumineers’ and got to number 8 in the UK charts. It’s also currently our “After Dark Album of the Week’ - who said After Dark and Daytime didn’t mix? This band originates from Denver, Colorado, with Wesley Schultz on lead vocals and guitar, Jeremiah Fraites, drums, percussion, mandolin and vocals, as well as Neyla Pakarek on cello, mandolin and vocals. Ho Hey can only be described as “folk with as edge”... If that’s allowed!

Jakwob - Blinding

Jakwob (James Jacobs) has the ability to put a little bit of everything into one track. He started off as a jazz musician, then moved onto death metal and then made the obvious transition to folk. Now it seems he has stuck with mixing dubstep, electro, classical piano with a dash of “cinematic orchestral soundscapes” - you wouldn’t think it would work, but somehow it really really does. There’s a reason why Zane Lowe chose this as his “Hottest Record in the World’.

Gamble Street - Lucy

Seeing as we are a student radio station, it’s only fitting to have a student band on our playlist? Joe Devine, lead guitarist of Gamble Street, is a Physicist by day here at the University of Nottingham and a rock star by night. Well not quite, but give it a chance... The rest of the band includes Nat Austin (Vocals, Rhythm guitar, piano), Jamie Byrne (drums, percussion and guitar) and Henry Green (bass). If you’re a UoN band/artist and want a chance to get yourselves heard on URN, email a demo of your track(s) to [email protected].
