After URN Sport Team caught up with the Swimming team earlier in the week we had been convinced, by them, that Uni were to dominate Varsity in a similar manner to their display in the previous event. What was to come was kind of expected but was in all senses perfection in the pool from Uni!
This was the second year for Varsity Swimming and Uni were confident having won the event last year and having swum better than Trent in recent events. Uni pool was packed with supporters from both universities building a really good atmosphere for an afternoon’s swimming.
The format of the afternoon was 9 individual races and 2 relays each for the men and the women with 6 competitors or teams, 3 from Uni and 3 from Trent in each race, then finishing off with a 6x50m squadron event for each gender. Points were distributed with the race winner taking 6 points, 2nd 5 points down to 6th place who received a point and relays were triple points.
The first race was the 100m individual medley, Uni could not have got off to a better start coming first and second in both the male and female races. But the Uni swimmers weren’t going to slow down as they then won both the male and female 4x50m freestyle relay and then another win in the female 50m backstroke. However it was to get even better in the men’s race as Uni managed to finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Already the Uni team had pulled away to a 47 point lead.
Uni’s dominance wasn’t going to stop though with more wins in the breaststroke and the butterfly. Trent came close to winning the female 100m freestyle with the swimmers neck and neck down the final length, but it wasn't to be for Trent with Uni winning by only 0.14 seconds! The scores stood at 202 Uni – 115 Trent.
After that it started to look easy for the Uni team as they took win after win in all the races thrown at them. After almost an hour and a half of swimming, the last event, the 6x50m squadron, took place, introduced by the Pirates of the Caribbean theme, it was set to be another display of Uni’s dominance as they won both the female and male races. That wrapped up a resounding 415-244 victory for the Nottingham University swimmers.
This sublime win takes Uni into a 2-1 lead in the CRY Charity Varsity 2010 series and really showed what a good swimming team Uni have as they were in a different league to Trent winning every event on the schedule!
