Varsity 2014 - Men's Basketball Match report

posted 25.02.14 at 12:15pm

University of Nottingham put Trent in their place as they convincingly beat the men in pink 75-42 in the 2014 Men’s Varsity Basketball fixture.

A capacity crowd of 4,426 people filled the Capital FM Arena to anxiously await the fate of their university team as the University of Nottingham faced up against Trent for the second consecutive year in the massive arena. The opening quarter was far more open than many had predicted with Trent eventually trailing 14-19 after the initial period of play. Some impressive layups by Trent’s McKen had exploited some lackadaisical defence from Coach Richardson’s side, but the crowd were certainly enjoying seeing so many baskets in such quick succession.

The second quarter continued much the same, with the University of Nottingham maintaining their lead with the score at 36-31 at the buzzer. Combination play from pointguard and playmaker Aaron Brown and captain Jeff Smith was really making the difference with fellow guard Zapeta also stamping his mark on the game with a beautiful layup from distance.

Tip off: 24th February 2014 8.15pm

This Monday sees the next instalment of the 2014 Charity Varsity series. It’s the fourth round of the competition in the series, with the series poised at 2 -1 to Nottingham Trent. It’s the turn of both the women’s and men’s basketball teams to take centre stage. Nottingham Uni will be keen for a quick comeback after losing the American Football 26-13 this afternoon.

The men’s basketball team will come into the match as firm favourites, as they sit the BUCS league above Trent. Trent lie 5th in BUCS Midlands Division 2A struggling to find any form with only 1 win from their 7 matches they’ve played. In stark contrast, Nottingham Uni sit 2nd in BUCS Midlands Division 1A, just behind Derby with 6 wins out of their 8 played.

Tonight marks the second clash in this year’s Varsity series as the University of Nottingham take on Trent in rugby league. UoN go into the game with a 1-0 series lead so far, following the spectacular 4-3 win in the Ice Hockey at the Capital FM Arena only a week ago.

The UoN rugby league players go into the game knowing they have an uphill task, facing a Trent side that not only beat them 8-14 in this fixture last year but are also in the division above them in the BUCs league.

This is Varsity however, where anything can happen, and spurred on by a hopefully sell-out crowd at the Harvey Hadden stadium the Uni lads have a great chance of making the overall varsity score 2-0.

If you wish to attend the event there is a free Bus running to the arena from both the Portland building and the Savoy at 6pm.
