This year’s ‘Super Wednesday’ came to a head in an enthralling game of Lacrosse which saw the University of Nottingham beat Trent 16-11 at the University Park Sports Centre and seal the entire Varsity Series. In only its second year, over 100 people travelled onto campus to watch the inter-University match which certainly did not disappoint after the extremely close contest in 2012.

The dust had settled in the University Park Sports Centre after Uni's tremendous 54-34 netball win, but the action wasn't over yet. A year of Varsity action that's seen a number of new innovations and introductions was about to get one more, as the Varsity Series opened it's doors to the world of wheelchair basketball. We were privileged to watch a display from the Derby Wheelblazers wheelchair basketball team, and afterwards members of the audience were invited to take a chair and give the sport a try for themselves.

Event: Varsity Men's Lacrosse
Location: Sport Centre Pitches, University of Nottingham
Date: 20th March
Start Time: 5.00pm

Although Varsity “Super Wednesday” has been reduced to only 2 events, many students will be making their way down to the University Park Sports Centre to watch the Varsity Lacrosse. In 2012 the event enthralled its audience, in its first year in the varsity series with a close and tense encounter which saw the University of Nottingham narrowly snatch victory over Trent 14-13. Unlike last year, “Super Wednesday” will be held at the University of Nottingham so, with a home advantage the students will be hoping to extend the current 6-2 lead on Trent which could see them open up an eight point lead which would seem unlikely to be overturned in the Summer Term.

Event: Women’s Netball Varsity
Location: Sport Centre, University of Nottingham
Date: 20th March
Start Time: 2.30pm

Varsity “Super Wednesday” is almost upon us and although it has been reduced to just 2 events, it could be a pivotal day in deciding the destination of the Varsity trophy. The women’s netball team will try and help secure the Varsity series for Nottingham University, who only require 2 more points to seal victory. With a win here and at Lacrosse later the same day Uni will attain an unassailable lead and retain the Varsity trophy for the first time in the competition's history.

Trent will be keen to gain revenge over their cross-city counterparts however, following a hotly-contested 46-38 victory for Uni in the 2012 Varsity series which helped Uni on their way to a 9-6 overall victory and allowed them to reclaim the trophy that had sat in Trent's trophy cabinet for the previous two years.

Another year and another victory in the pool sees University of Nottingham (UoN) continue their amazing winning streak at Swimming Varsity. This competition historically has always been a one sided affair; not much changed on Wednesday as UoN beat Trent 138-80, winning all but one event at the sports center.

The only Trent victory came in the 100m women’s Breaststroke, with an impressive time of 1.16m.

The highlight of the competition was the Medley Skins event. In only its 3rd year, the event has become a massive hit with the spectators. The choice of stroke for each of the 8 rounds were picked random and with the last placed finisher in each round eliminated the event is a test of endurance and versatility. Alice Morgan (UoN) and Ian MacMillan (UoN) were the winners of the men and women’s event.

The standout competitors of the day were Ian MacMillan (UoN) in the 100m Butterfly, Chloe Robbins (UoN) in the Individual Medley/ Freestyle and Amy Root (Trent) in the Breaststroke.

Sam Jackson, President of the UoN Swim Team, spoke of his delight in the performance of the team, especially with their busy schedule competing in the BUCS finals.

Victory in the pool leaves the current scores of the Charity Varsity series as 4-2 to UoN.
