On February 18th the Capital FM Arena hosted the blue-ribbon event of the Varsity Series: Varsity Ice Hockey. Representative sides for the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, drawn from the Nottingham Universities Mavericks joint team, faced off in front of a full-capacity crowd for the biggest event of the Varsity calendar.

Beeston Hockey Club was host to the tightest game of the Varsity Series so far, in which the Uni & Trent Men's Hockey 1sts had to be separated by penalty flicks, having drawn the game 2-2. But fortune smiled on the Uni boys as they triumphed on penalties 6-5.

Friday evening saw the Uni Ladies 1sts rise triumphant 3-1 against a well-drilled Trent side who proved hard to break down.

If I was a betting man, and in the unlikely event a bookies were prepared to offer odds on a Varsity event, I'd have my money on Uni to win on Wednesday. Why? Because the University of Nottingham have never failed to win Varsity Swimming since the event's inception. Clearly being the only University in Nottingham to possess a swimming pool has its advantages!
