The Big Picture 03-10-2012: The Jubilympics, Summer Politics Review, and Tuition Fees

posted 04.10.12 at 3:33pm

Have a listen to our first show of the 2012-13 academic year here: http://urn1350.net/podcast/28

On this week's show the Big Picture panel features newcomers Elliot, Sebastian and Robert, who sparred with veteran panellist Jonny over the nature of last summer's explosion of patriotic spirit, the latest Cabinet reshuffle, Nick Clegg's apology video, and the trouble with tuition fees.

We did have some fairly major sound issues in the first debate, and whilst we've tried to correct them for the podcast there are ongoing issues with background noise and fading whenever Jonny or I were speaking in the first debate. We managed to fix it for the second and third discussions, though, so stick with it!

Big Picture 03-10-2012

The first show of the 2012/13 academic year. A brand new Big Picture panel discusses the summer's explosion of patriotic fervour in the wake of Olympic success and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee; the impact of the latest Cabinet reshuffle and the resounding failure of Nick Clegg's apology video; and the impact of rising tuition fees on university applications and funding.

N.B.: Due to technical issues in-studio the audio from the microphone that David and Jonny were using was *very* quiet. We've tried to correct for this in the version here on the podcast, but be aware that background noise may be a problem in the first twenty minutes or so.

State Multiculturalism:

David Cameron has said state multiculturalism has failed and has called for more scrutiny of Muslim groups who get public money but do little to tackle extremism. Is he right? Or was Sadiq Khan MP, Shadow Justice Secretary, right when he said that the Prime Minister was "writing propaganda material for the EDL"?

Tuition Fees:

The Chair of the Russell Group, which includes Nottingham, has said that the top universities will charge the maximum £9,000 a year. Oxford and Cambridge have confirmed they will charge this amount for courses starting in 2012. Doesn't this contradict the government's position that the 'majority' of universities would not charge over £6,000 a year.

Also on the show:

Labour has said that police numbers will be cut by 10,000.
AOL buys the Huffington Post online newspaper for $315m.
Should the Speaker have taken action over Labour MPs mocking of an MP with cerebral palsy?
