NU2Sport, NFL, Champions League and United's Victory

posted 25.04.13 at 8:40pm

The Thursday Sport Show returned after a month-long holiday absence to set the world of sport to rights, and the chaps certainly pulled no punches. Gaffers was joined by Sam, Rob, Sachin and Jack to look forward to a great summer of sport awaiting us at the university, including the remaining clashes of the Varsity Series. We also gave a big mention to NU2Sport, the university organisation promoting involvement in sport at all levels, who are encouraging everyone to get out in the sunshine and make the most of the fantastic sports facilities that UoN has to offer. Then discussion turned to tonight's NFL Draft, one of the biggest events on the world sporting calendar, and we speculated on how the fates would shine on 2 British contenders for franchise contracts; Lawrence Okoye and Menelik Watson.

Next up, our attentions turned to the absolutely flabbergasting batting performance put in by Chris Gayle of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL earlier in the week. Gayle's superlative performance, in which he achieved a century in a record-breaking mere 30 balls, left the panel in raptures. We then switched our focus to the Champions League, and another incredible individual performance, this time from Borussia Dortmund number 9 Robert Lewandowski whose 4 goals saw the boys from the Rhine valley smash the galacticos of Real Madrid.

Oscar Pistorius, 6 Nations and European Football

In this week's Thursday edition of the Sport Show, Gaffers, Dave, Sam & Justin began by discussing the latest developments in Oscar Pistorius's bail hearing. With the events surrounding Reeva Steenkamp's death still very unclear, and the conduct of the investigation now being brought into question, we discussed how the ongoing trial and media circus would affect the Paralympic sprinter's career and reputation. We then brought our focus back to UK shores to examine the imminent arrival of veteran Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting, who will see out a 2-month contract at Surrey County Cricket Club. Although the 38-year-old Ponting may have passed his peak, his star quality will surely attract the crowds. And finally in this section, we also took a look at the final session of F1 pre-season testing in Barcelona, to take an educated guess at which teams look most competitive for this year's competition.

Thai Boxing, Lee Hughes to leave Notts County, and England's 2nd Test

In this week's episode of the Thursday Sport Show the team welcomed Georgie from the Nottingham University Thai Boxing Club who spoke to us about what the University's Muay Thai practitioners get up to both in and outside the ring, as well as about the sport in general. She then faced off against the Sport Team's very own Chris Brown in a quiz about Thai Boxing - the results of which were quite surprising! We'll keep you up to date in future shows as to whether Chris makes good on his promise to pay the Thai Boxing Club a visit.
