Captain Celia Butler's take on NUWHC's chances in their upcoming Varsity Hockey match...

This season has been an overall success for the team, having achieved our primary objective of staying up in the premier league and not getting relegated. Highlights of the season include beating Loughborough uni at home and Durham away in the snow. With the season finishing really early, we’ve been fortunate in having a few weeks free to prepare thoroughly for Varsity with friendlies and fitness sessions. Beating Trent won’t be easy though, especially after our humiliating defeat last year when we were set to win. They have some particularly strong players, with the likes of Sophie Robinson, who scored 4 of Trent’s five goals last year. We enter the game though with a number of players of similar calibre. People to watch are Jo Hunter in the midfield, Helen Ferguson in defence and Becky Eaton upfront. There is class and skill throughout the whole squad. Women’s hockey Varsity 2011 is set to be huge.

Women's Hockey takes on the Sports Quiz...

Uni’s women’s basketball team narrowly lost out 49-54 to Trent in yesterday’s varsity game in front of a packed University Park Sport Centre. In truth the final score does not reflect the game as whole as Trent dominated for three of the four quarters. However a spirited come back from Uni in the final quarter brought a tense finish to a game that seemed destined at one stage to be a walkover for Trent. However despite Uni’s rally in the fourth Trent still held on to their advantage to win by six and make it 4-1 in the series before the Netball and Men’s basketball games.

As the second Varsity event approaches, URN Sport has put together a brief summary of the rules of Ice Hockey.

Horseball, a combination of Basketball and Rugby, played whilst on horseback has steadily grown in popularity since its creation in France some 30 years ago. Nottingham Uni are one of the few institutes of higher education to have a representative team and they came in to have a chat to the URN sports team.
