England vs. France. A fans eye-view with Louis Cotgrove

England vs France – Wednesday 17th November 2010 at Wembley Stadium.

Exclusively for URN, Louis Cotgrove reports on the England vs. France friendly international, which can only be described as a waste of 20 quid.

Passion, commitment, desire, enjoyment, entertainment. These five words can be applied to any England national team, except perhaps football. The players seemed to merely pay lip service to the honour of representing one’s country in a sporting medium. The defence was shoddy, the midfield lacklustre, the attack limited. When I told people, I was at the England game, the responses were all the same, “Commiserations”, “I turned it over halfway through”, “They are [awful], why [on earth] would you go to see them play?” I wish I could disagree…

The perils of the Championship supporter, an insight into fans of lower league football

You don’t choose to support a lower league team; you choose to support Manchester United or Arsenal. Supporting a lower league team is forced upon you. You’re either born into a club or dragged into due to location. If you’re born in Brighton and your Dad supports Cardiff, you aren’t going to be an Aston Villa fan. Being born into a club, you’re led to believe that they are the greatest club and it’s hard to realise that they aren’t. Being brought up as a Forest fan and believing Steve Chettle to be a cultured defender, or that Neil Shipperley really was good enough to hit the back of the net on a regular basis (his record of 1 in 20 for the club would suggest otherwise), it became hard to admit that we really weren’t as good as
my Dad promised we would be.

Varsity Men’s Football goes all the way!

Monday March 22nd. Meadow Lane. Trent women have just beaten Uni 3-1. The 2010 C.R.Y. Nottingham Varsity Series now stands at 6-4 to Trent. The crowd is building. The chants are being sung, and the two teams are warming up for the start of the men’s football. An electric atmosphere and a terrific scenario must have had both sets of players buzzing before kick-off, I know I was feeling the tension all the way up in the stands in what was a vitally important game for both teams.

Highlights from the night's broadcast:
