URN Interviews: Emma Collins

posted 23.06.15 at 2:13pm

Earlier this year, as a part of the Pulse's investigation into the experience facing Students with Disabilities at the University of Nottingham, we spoke to UoN Student and GB Para-Rower, Emma Collins, about an experience she faced at Freshers Tent last September.

Emma, who suffers from multiple disabilities, was told that she couldn't join the UoN Rowing Squad due to her disability, and she spoke to URN News Editor - Samuel Boyle - about her story:

Sam: Emma, I know when you joined the University of Nottingham that you tried to join the UoN Rowing squads - what happened there?

Emma: I went up to the stall at Freshers Fair and told them my situation, because I suffer from multiple disabilities, which is to be fair something that is not easy to deal with, but the people on the stand were not terribly helpful - they said, flat out, 'we don't deal with disabilities'.

Sam: And were you shocked by that?

Emma: I wasn't shocked - I was a little surprised, and a little hurt, but its something as a disabled person that you will unfortunately get used to. I just think there wasn't enough awareness training going on - which is no ones fault, it's just the way it is.

posted 18.06.15 at 12:26pm

The University of Nottingham Students Union Grad Ball has been rocked by a number of complaints this year with issues regarding the ticketing process being followed up by criticisms of the event which took place on Tuesday 16th June.

With students and local residents taking to Facebook to voice their complaints, Patrick Hildred found out more - including speaking to those who enjoyed the event, and your Students Union Activities Officer, Joe Caunce.

Later on Wednesday evening, the University of Nottingham Students Union released a survey asking for student opinion of the event - and released the following statement:

The Pulse team in the studio then discussed the story, and looked at how the UoNSU should look to organize the event next year:

URN News Investigates - Students with Disabilities: Is our Uni doing enough?

In this URN News Investigation, we explore whether all student's get an equal chance - and if the same opportunities are provided to Students with Disabilities.

With the University of Nottingham Students Union having lacked a Disabled Students' Officer between November and July 2013-14, we wanted to find out whether Students with Disabilities have enough support and representation at our University.

Exploring the academic support provided to Students with Disabilities as well as whether Societies and Sports teams were inclusive for all students wanting to participate we spoke to you, the students, about your experiences through your time at University.

Uncovering flaws in committee training and a lack of representation in our Students Union, we put our findings to the UoNSU President, Harry Copson, who made some surprising admissions.

After the investigation, the Nottingham University Boatclub released this statement:

Grad Ball Tickets: What Went Wrong?

posted 30.04.15 at 10:34am

On Tuesday morning, Graduation Ball dinner tickets went on sale - with students queuing up from as early as 3am to try and secure one of the years most prized items. With only 350 dinner tickets available for a student population of 8000 gradudates this year, many students have complained that simply not enough tickets were on sale - with some students who queued up in the Portland building from 5.30am not getting the chance to buy a dinner ticket for one of the years most prestigious nights.

Over 2000 'Entertainment' tickets, were available on Wednesday morning for those students who missed out, however that has not stopped the complaints raining in on the Event's Facebook page.

Looking back at the story on the Pulse, Annabel began by explaining how the events unfolded - and some of the complaints that the students had, including over the controversial decision to allow non-University of Nottingham students to attend.

Trying to uncover what really happened on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, and what students were most upset with in how the events unfolded, we spoke to those around campus to find out their experiences:
