HealthyU Week on Campus
19 November 2014 - 4:13pm — The PulseOn Monday, the Pulse teamed discussed the HealthyU events taking place on campus this week. Our conversation began with a short interview with Chloe Averill, SU Equal Opportunities and Welfare officer:
Chloe told us about many events that are going on this week on University Park and Jubilee Campuses, and next week on Sutton Bonnington.
We then discussed our own health issues and concerns in the studio, and how HealthyU week could benefit us.
The team in the URN studio came to the conclusion that the HealthyU fair and other events occurring this week will be of great benefit to us, especially as students, to help us learn more about keeping ourselves well and fit to continue our studies.
The Pulse brings you the news that matters to you, every day of the week between 5 and 6pm.
If you would like to tell us about your health experiences, or make any comments about HealthyU week, leave a comment below or tweet us @URNPulse.
The World of Revenge Porn.
19 June 2014 - 6:04pm — The Pulse
A new trend affecting online privacy.
The terrifying trend of revenge porn is increasing in the UK and so The Pulse decided to investigate. This is a worldwide issue with legislation starting in Scotland, Ireland and Africa. We spoke to victims and campaigners in America and students in the UK who is raising awareness of the issue.
Take a listen to the full story of Revenge Porn and how it affects students here:
And the studio discussion had many different views:
Here are some of the many conflicting comments we recieved throughout the show:
But why are so many people taking naked pics of themselves and sending them to people? Surely it is entirely foreseeable that this kind of thing could happen.
No more victim blaming! The person who uses the photos maliciously is the one who is in the wrong.
I've been in a relationship for two and a half years and I still wouldn't swap naked pics.
Of course victims of revenge porn are victims, but it's still stupid to swap nude pictures.
Is this the end of Joint Honours?
18 June 2014 - 4:56pm — The Pulse
The end of endless possibilities?
In an interview with the Students' Union Education Officer, Dasha Karzunina, The Pulse discovered that many joint honours subjects may be axed by the University.
She explained why the University are looking into this option:
We spoke to a tutor at the University to find out if joint honours students cause problems for marking and assessments:
Students on campus voiced their opinions about the possibility of the University getting rid of joint honours:
Will, an English and Classics joint honours student, explained his feelings about his dual degree:
What do you think? Should the University get rid of joint honours? Or with rising fees should students be able to choose exactly what subjects they want to do? Comment below to let us know your thoughts.
Student Stories: Imagine balancing a degree and a baby
2 June 2014 - 6:04pm — The Pulse
Managing a degree with societies and a social life can seem like a challenge, but imagine also adding a baby into the equation.
We spoke to an English & Philosophy second year student about how she manages being a parent and a student:
She was very positive about her experience, but that's not always the case. We spoke to Dasha Karzunina, the SU Education Officer, about the support available from the Union.
The Student Advice Centre are a fantastic resource to help students, and they give particular help to students with children. The issues range from getting academic support and extenuating circumstances, to getting advice about which school to send their kids to.
The majority of these students are mature students, but lots of students come in who are recently pregnant and need help figuring out how much time they can take out of their degree, and whether they'll be able to come back.
There is a group for students with caring responsibilities, but it's currently very underused. There is also a mature students' network, but there is nothing specialised for students with children.

Leading Ladies: A Conversation with Three Power Women at UoN
7 March 2014 - 6:53pm — The Pulse
Sarah O'Hara, Ellie McWiliam and Sarah Gosling
This Saturday, the 8th March, marks International Women's Day. Around the world, celebrations of respect, appreciation and love take place to honour women from all walks of life. The United Nations' theme for International Women's Day this year is 'Equality for Women is Progress for All'.
Here at the University of Nottingham we decided to celebrate this by speaking to three of the most powerful women on campus.
This is the announcement on URN of Ellie McWilliam becoming SU President this time last year:
Two other women at different stages of their career at the University are the Chief Executive of your Students' Union, Sarah Gosling, and Sarah O'Hara, one of seven Pro-Vice Chancellors here at the University.
We got the three of them together to discuss their experiences as influential women in the Students' Union and in the University.
Hear the interview in full below.
We first asked Ellie about running for the position of the leader of the union:
