This Tuesday sees the return of the Charity Varsity series at Notts County’s Meadow Lane. Uni lead the series 6-4 going into Tuesday and have the opportunity to really take control with only 5 events left.
Last season saw a great defensive effort and intelligent offense in the Trent half give Uni an 18-7 victory, but that was last year and Uni won’t be able to rely on the boot of ‘Man of the Match’ David Heads this year.
The teams have had polar opposite seasons, with Trent unable to record a victory resulting in relegation from the higher tier, and Uni having a storming second half of the season which has seen them gain promotion. But this is Varsity. All regular season form tends to go out the window. Add this to the excitement of playing at Meadow lane in front of 5,000 spectators, and all bets are off.
Trent have an extremely physical side, and definitely size in their favour in the forwards and backs. Explosive centre Romey Vassel is back from a year abroad and after single-handedly bossing the 2010 Varsity. Uni will have to stop him if they’re to have any chance of winning this. Then there is the rest of the team who, whilst they haven’t won this season, have been playing against the best university rugby players in the country all season.
