Women's Hockey levels the Varsity Series for Uni

posted 22.03.11 at 8:16pm 1 comment

The Women’s Varsity Hockey pushed back in glorious sunshine at half past three in front of a decent-sized crowd for a lazy Friday afternoon. Trent dominated the opening exchanges, looking dangerous on several occasions but it was Uni that struck first on 18 minutes, after some lovely build-up play sliced through the Trent defence and a perfect cross from the right wing resulted in a delicate lob over the hopeless Trent keeper. 1-0 to Uni and with that, the dynamic of the game completely changed, with the girls in green now controlling the play.

For the rest of the half, Uni remained in charge, but were guilty of over-playing and not testing the Trent goaltender enough, leading to much frustration amongst the spectators. However, the girls in white and pink still looked very dangerous on the counter-attack, but their shooting consistently let them down despite working several good breaks. With the score line still close at the end of the 35 minutes, it was anybody’s game.

Forward – “Pube” – Celia Butler (written by vice captain Helen ferguson)

Celia is the captain of all captains. The most committed and enthusiastic captain I have ever played with. Celia’s positivity and motivational attitude throughout the highs and lows of this season has ensured we remained in the premier league for another year. As well as being an outstanding captain she is also one of the best players on the team. Her speed and strength will knock any defender off their feet but unfortunately not Trent’s. A recent hamstring injury has meant Celia will not be able to play in Varsity but her shouts of encouragement will be heard loud and clear from the sideline.

Goalie – “Eggy” – Katy Blyth

Eggy started off the season as an outfield player but her skills in goal were soon discovered. She bravely stepped up to the plate for our first ever season in Premier league hockey and has been tremendous. She received a number of votes for Player of the Season.

Captain Celia Butler's take on NUWHC's chances in their upcoming Varsity Hockey match...

This season has been an overall success for the team, having achieved our primary objective of staying up in the premier league and not getting relegated. Highlights of the season include beating Loughborough uni at home and Durham away in the snow. With the season finishing really early, we’ve been fortunate in having a few weeks free to prepare thoroughly for Varsity with friendlies and fitness sessions. Beating Trent won’t be easy though, especially after our humiliating defeat last year when we were set to win. They have some particularly strong players, with the likes of Sophie Robinson, who scored 4 of Trent’s five goals last year. We enter the game though with a number of players of similar calibre. People to watch are Jo Hunter in the midfield, Helen Ferguson in defence and Becky Eaton upfront. There is class and skill throughout the whole squad. Women’s hockey Varsity 2011 is set to be huge.
