Manifesto
Student activities are at the forefront of the lives of countless thousands of students on campuses across the country and the provision of services at the UoN sees over 200 active societies and award-winning SRSs.
However no system is perfect and whilst some issues are clear-cut the vast diversity of our University means there are no one-size-fits-all policies and I want to help build an SU which continues to build a state of connectivity with the student body.
This manifesto aims to democratise the SU process for the average student by improving transparency and access, widen student participation, and make it easier for societies to run their day-to-day business.
Accessibility and inclusivity:
• Open a monthly Activities Forum to provide all students with direct access to the SU process and publish the minutes online
• Improve the accessibility of events such as Freshers’ and Re-Freshers’ Fair by working with representative student leaders
• Continue to strengthen links with off-campus groups such as the Sutton Bonington Guild by holding regular clinics
• Start a bi-weekly Activities blog documenting all the latest society news and details from Council Meetings
• Clearer access to employment and financial advice services
Continue the great work in widening student participation:
• Expand Re-Freshers’ Fair – not just stalls but opportunities for societies to showcase what they’re all about
• Create an advice group operating online via the SU website and social media to help students with demanding timetables manage their participation in societies and SRSs without impacting on their course
• Keep online society registration open all year
Making it easier for societies:
• Simplify the room bookings system and eliminate double-bookings
• Work on broadening storage options for all student groups that need it
• Expand the social media and publicity training available at Bronze Briefing
• Make the STARS timetables more flexible
